People in the “blue zones” engage in physical activities that feel intuitive and effortless. They don't pump iron, run marathons, or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow row-padding gardens and do not have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work.
✅ Know your purpose.
Having a well-defined sense of goals and a meaningful life mission is worth up to 7 years of extra life expectancy. The Okinawans call it Ikigai and the Nicoyans call it plan de vida. For both, it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.”
✅ Downshift and prioritize your well-being.
Even people in the Blue Zones experience stress–it's unavoidable. Stress leads to chronic inflammation, associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that others do not are routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors; Adventists pray; Ikarians take a nap; and Sardinians do happy hour.
✅ Follow the 80% Rule when eating.
The Okinawan 2500-year old Confucian mantra of Hara hachi bu said before meals reminds them to stop eating when their stomachs are 80% full. The 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it. People in the Blue Zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening, and then, they do not eat any more the rest of the day.
✅ Consume more plant-based food.
Beans, including fava, black, soy, and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only 5 times per month. Serving sizes are 3 to 4 oz, about the size of a deck of cards.
✅ Drink alcohol moderately and regularly.
Moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers. The trick is to drink 1 to 2 glasses per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you cannot save up all week and have 14 drinks on Saturday.
✅ Belong in a faith-based community.
All but 5 of the 263 centenarians interviewed belonged to some religious groups. Denomination does not seem to matter. Research shows that attending faith-based services 4 times per month will add 4 to 14 years of life expectancy.
✅ Place your family at the center of your life.
Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their loved-ones first. This means keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home (it lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home too.). They commit to a life partner (which can add up to 3 years of life expectancy) and invest in their children with time and love.
✅ Find your tribe and belong in a social circle that supports healthy behaviors.

Columbia University science professor H.C. Sherman (along with his colleague A.O. Gettler) was one of the first to conduct experiments on food intake in relation to health.
Sherman, who went on to become the President of the American Institute of Nutrition and Chief of the U.S. Bureau of Human Nutrition…
Decided to calculate the amount of "acidic ash" certain foods created by burning and boiling organic plant matter in platinum dishes and nickel crucibles.
His study sought to find out which foods yielded higher percentages of acid-forming elements versus more alkaline, base-forming elements in the body.
Eventually, this test moved onto human trials to see if the body's metabolism would have a similar effect to his experiments in the lab.
He wanted to see if certain foods would cause our bodies to steal vital minerals from our bones and organs and offset our body's natural pH.
For the next few decades, Sherman devoted his time, energy, and resources to biological research in order to get "quantitative answers in chemical terms to many of man's greatest problems."

And it's a serious disorder that occurs when your body's acid-base balance is out of sync.
Chances are you've had the acute form of it at some point in your life…

The much more serious, chronic form of metabolic acidosis can last for a few weeks up to several years or more…
And is normally caused by impaired kidney function or bicarbonate wasting…
Which can impact the cardiovascular system, muscles, and bones–as well as kidneys.
So what exactly is acidosis?
Essentially, it's when the body's blood starts to deviate from its proper pH level of 7.35.
Fortunately, this is very unlikely to occur on its own…
As the body has multiple mechanisms for ensuring a very stable blood pH.
However, the pH of our cells and intracellular space CAN become more acidic and cause a disruption of our body's natural enzyme function.
As Sherman and Warburg discovered early on, the measured pH of the food and beverages we consume doesn't induce acidosis on their own…
Instead, the byproduct and chemical breakdown of those foods can result in acid-base changes inside our bodies
That's where the burning experiment I mentioned earlier came in.
While our kidneys and lungs get rid of most of this byproduct, it doesn't eliminate ALL of it.
So if your body DOES become too acidic, it will begin to set up defense mechanisms to prevent the damaging excess acid from entering your vital organs…
And if your pH levels fall out of their optimal range, the important systems in your body CAN stop functioning…
Or even fail completely.
When thinking of the diets and nutrition of the Blue Zones, consider that most of their food (and even their wine!) is locally-sourced and all natural.

And studies show that our pre-agriculture diets were mostly alkaline-producing and aligned with this "farm to table" principle.
In contrast, the average diet in the United States is significantly more acid-producing…
